Power to the prism

Artist Ptolemy Mann and Johnson Tiles unveiled a stunning mural made up of more than 4,200 tiles at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week in London.

The showstopping spectrum of never-before-seen shades launch the brand new Prismatics range of coloured tiles from the UK’s leading tile manufacturer.

Designed by textile artist and colour consultant Ptolemy Mann, the mural entitled ‘Prismatic Landscape’, covered the outside of the Farmiloe Building, home to The Design Factory throughout Clerkenwell Design Week.

A total of 4,224 individual tiles were used for the installation, which cover nearly 100 square metres, adorning three of the building’s walls in a riot of shades.

The new Prismatics range features a new collection of on-trend neutral and accent colours, complementing the existing core bestsellers, offering a choice of 68 different gloss and matt shades with coordinating fittings.

Ptolemy Mann said: “It’s fantastic, I just love the fact that we’ve taken a beautifully simple product and just given it a whole new lease of life. I’m pleased to say it’s exactly as I envisioned it, if not better.

“I really like the matt and gloss together and the fact that we’ve only used 68 colours when it looks more like 600. I’ve loved seeing the reactions of people when they see the mural for the first time. We’ve elevated the humble tile and made it feel new and refreshed. I love it so much, I’m already thinking about what to do next.”?

Darren Clanford, Creative Director at Johnson Tiles, said: “”I was over the moon when I saw the finished mural for the first time. It’s been nine months in the making and I’m delighted with the entire team.

“The best thing is when you look at the wall it’s got a natural movement. People walk past and it interacts with them in the reflections and, while the colours really come alive, the wall itself almost comes alive too.

“Ptolemy Mann is the perfect partner to bring our new collection to life, demonstrating not only our range of colours and shades, but the versatility and endless creativity Prismatics offers.”
