Lighting Up Windlesham with Indie Interiors

Stefanie Fletcher, Founder & Design Director of Indie Interiors, delves into her lighting selections on a recent residential project in Windlesham, Surrey.

“The brief for the Windlesham project was to create a forever family home for our client; a home that was contemporary yet classic with an interior elegant enough to withstand the test of time. We added an array of interior architectural details, bespoke joinery, and lighting pieces to enhance the grandeur of the property whilst still ensuring it felt welcoming and homely.

The selection of both decorative and architectural lighting is an extremely important aspect of a project for us and along with their placement, kelvin and dimmability it is a key area of our design process and one which cannot be overlooked. Lighting has the capabilities to turn an ordinary room into an amazing one and within this project we opted for fixtures which exuded class and elegance whilst retaining the character we were encapsulating within each space.

Within the hallway, we selected a large metal leaf sculpture light fitting, which travelled from the top corner of the panelled wall diagonally to the bottom. I wanted the light to invoke the sense of floating down the hallway and felt the placement did this effortlessly. Beyond its aesthetic and functional uses, lighting selection within a residential project such as this can provide a powerful story telling tale not only for the design story of the home but one which relates directly to the clients, their tastes and their personal life.

Our client asked for their son’s room to be aesthetically pleasing yet fun and age appropriate so we selected a multi globe pendant from Jimmy Raiden. I wanted to choose something which could spark the imagination of both children and adults, blending functionality with creativity with the lighting fixture resembling planets circling in the sky.

Within the clients daughters bedroom we selected a gorgeous crystal bead droplet chandelier and we chose this not only for its delicate, feminine feel but also because it felt appropriate both for a small child and a grown adult. To a small child I felt it represented raindrops gathering in the sky but for an adult it feels rather serene and elegant with its warm and diffuse glow, sure to last for years as the child grows into the bedroom.

When we are designing a space we first ask the question on how the client wants the room to feel and how they will use it with lighting playing a crucial role in setting the scene for this. In the formal lounge of this project, due to the shape and preferred layout, we included lots of individual seating areas however part of the client brief was this room was to be used for special occasions such as Christmas. In order to feel as though all of the room was linked and ‘together’ I selected two matching Sloane pendants from David Hunt not only for its beautiful hammered texture and bronze finish but also because of the arms which all gently curve up into the centre, signifying each of the seating spaces in the room coming joining as one, families and friends all coming together.

Within the kitchen area we selected three of the large Derwent pendants from Heathfield and co. I needed the lighting here to feel as expansive as the island  to help ground the space  but also be proportionately similar. I also wanted to link the slightly more contemporary living space with the kitchen and the sleek, geometric form of the Derwent does exactly that.

I am a big supporter of British craftsmanship and was delighted when the client approved our selection of the natural selenite lamps designed and produced by Tyson UK. Within the master suite we were incredibly detail orientated across everything from the cabinetry to the end of bed bench and I wanted to select a natural material for the lamps which would further enhance that individuality, intricate detail and natural beauty of the space. The room is also vast and it was important to select lighting pieces which were proportionate to the space so we selected the Holt 6 arm pendant from Heathfield and co. It is made from solid brass and oozes unfussy sophistication which emulates the overall feel of the room.

For the master bathroom we sourced some gorgeous Waterfall wall lights we sourced from Portuguese company Villa Lumi. Our client asked us to find a balance between a slightly traditional bathroom but with a more polished and high end feel, and the drama, sophistication and glamour of the Waterfall provided us with the luxurious and timeless feel we were hoping to achieve. Each glass block within the light is meticulously handcrafted with the material mimicking the flow of water, making it perfect to positioned alongside the antique brass Gessi tapware.

Lighting is an incredibly powerful tool to enhance the aesthetic, ambiance and grandeur of a room. Not only are the individual pieces important, the architectural and task lighting, which are introduced through lighting plans, also help to create both functional and delicate lighting throughout the home. Architectural lighting allows us to introduce dramatic contrasts between shadow and light; highlighting elements such as ceilings, window reveals and fire surrounds, drawing attention to specific architectural features to add depth and interest. Lighting goes far beyond just brightening up a space.”
