Since discovering the traditional, age-old technique of steam bending wood whilst studying his degree in 3D Sustainability & Design, Tom Raffield has been on an incredible self-taught journey of developing and understanding the process to become one of the world leaders in his craft.
Raffield’s fascination with the ecological technique allows him to create intricate curves and twists, mimicking organic shapes and celebrating the very thing that inspires him – nature. He is one of a new generation of designers and makers, using his craft in innovative and contemporary ways.
Leading the charge in sustainable design, he is driven to forge a path to excellence and cause as little environmental impact as possible along the way. Nearly two decades later and still passionate about education, Tom has passed on his skills and taught his steam bending craft to our team of workshop makers.
Raffield says, “Having such a good understanding of the material and the process ensures there are no restrictions on creativity – knowing that anything can be achieved is extraordinarily liberating”.
Inspired by the organic shapes found in nature, Raffield and his team create some of the most innovative and eco-friendly lighting fixtures in today’s contemporary design world. Bringing the beauty of the natural world inside, each piece is handcrafted to a very high standard at the Tom Raffield studio in Cornwall, England.
The product range has a wide offering of styles from his most iconic Skipper and No. 1 Pendants, to large chandelier and new favourites such as the Bloom and colourful Cove designs. There are beautiful, elegant wall lights and a growing range of wireless and portable table lights to choose from.
Available online and to trade professionals, Raffield has gained an international client base, and his designs can be found across the globe in a variety of interiors, including residential spaces, hotels, chalets and spas.
