This September, award-winning interior designer Katharine Pooley and her in-house design team will partner with The Childhood Trust to reimagine a children’s bedroom in a truly transformative way. This project is part of Pooley’s ongoing commitment to The Childhood Trust’s Transforming Spaces programme, marking her 8th year as an ambassador for the charity.
An estimated 730,000, about 35% of all children in London are living in poverty. Many lack access to basic necessities including food, clothing and a safe place to rest in a supportive environment. The ongoing cost-of-living crisis worsens this reality, leaving more children vulnerable and at risk. The Childhood Trust works to tackle this, and Transforming Spaces is its flagship community outreach initiative. Each week the charity redesign and refurbish bedrooms for children experiencing the impacts of poverty and the programme’s mission is clear – to provide children with safe, nurturing environments where they can sleep, learn, play, and thrive.
Katharine Pooley champions the Transforming Spaces programme, personally overseeing projects that transform not just rooms, but lives. Her approach is rooted in empathy and collaboration, ensuring every design reflects the unique needs of each child. So far in 2025, Katharine has collaborated on seven projects, helping a total of 21 children. By providing safe, inspiring spaces, the programme helps break the cycle of inequity and supports children’s mental, emotional, and educational development. The impact extends far beyond interior decor – these transformations lay the groundwork for healthier, happier futures with greater pride and optimism.
“The Childhood Trust is a cause that holds deep personal significance for me and resonates with everyone at my studio,” said Katharine Pooley. “Each year, we are proud to support its life-changing mission by reimagining spaces for children who need them most. We approach every room with the same care and creativity we bring to all our work but with an even greater sense of purpose. Creating a space where a child feels safe, comfortable, and inspired to learn and dream isn’t just important, it’s absolutely essential. Every child deserves that sanctuary, and it’s a privilege to be part of making that a reality.”
Josephine McCartney, Chief Executive at The Childhood Trust, said: “The Childhood Trust’s partnership with the Katharine Pooley team on our Transforming Spaces programme exemplifies the power of a shared vision. With 700,000 children in London living in poverty, we share an understanding of the profound impact a safe, warm space can have. Transforming Spaces creates life-changing environments for vulnerable children, providing them with the essentials they need and deserve. This collaboration allows the Katharine Pooley team to bring their exceptional talent and passion to a cause where it makes a tangible, meaningful difference. We are incredibly proud of what we achieve together for these families.”
For the Hackney bedroom makeover, Katharine Pooley and her design team have thoughtfully planned a comprehensive transformation to create a safe, inspiring, and functional space for a three year old girl. The scope of work includes:
* Wall treatments – Preparation and painting of the walls to refresh and brighten the room, setting a calming and welcoming tone.
* New window dressings – Installation of stylish and practical window coverings to enhance privacy, control light, and add a touch of elegance.
* Rugs – Placement of soft, durable rugs to provide warmth, comfort, and a cozy area for play or relaxation.
* New furniture – Thoughtfully selected pieces including a desk and chair for studying, a trundle bed for flexibility and sleepovers, and a spacious wardrobe to ensure ample storage for clothing and essentials.
* Artwork – Curated artwork to personalise the space, spark creativity, and make the room feel special.
* Storage solutions – Innovative organisational features to keep belongings tidy, fostering a sense of order and independence.
* Soft furnishings – Addition of cushions, throws, and bedding to introduce colour, texture, and comfort, making the bedroom feel like a sanctuary.
* Lighting – New lampshades to update the lighting scheme, adding warmth and depth.
This holistic approach not only revitalises the physical environment but also supports the child’s wellbeing, providing a nurturing space where they can flourish.
