Get creative

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is proud to announce the launch of their first interior design competition for students. The event is a one day, charrette-style, CAD free design competition, open to third year BA Interior Design and Interior Architecture degree students.

The aim of the competition is for students to design collaboratively in teams of six people, mentored by a seasoned, practicing interior designer and BIID member. The competition will take place on Saturday 14th November 2016 and attendance is free of charge for the students taking part. The BIID has invited educators from Interior Design and Interior Architecture courses across the UK, to nominate a team of six students to register and compete.

Students will be given the brief on the day and will have just seven hours to develop it, before presenting their designs to a judging panel of renowned industry figures. The panel will be chaired by BIID President Daniel Hopwood, along with fellow-judges Ben Spriggs; Deputy Editor of Elle Decoration and Katie Treggiden, design journalist and founder of Fiera magazine.

After a day of intensive design work, the team will publicly present their submissions to the judges. After the panel have deliberated over the entries, prizes will be awarded to the three most compelling, creative and innovative schemes. This year’s brief will focus on the thriving tech start-up industry around London’s Silicon Roundabout.

The BIID Student Design Challenge day will take place at Campus London, Google’s space for entrepreneurs, which should provide fitting inspiration for the student’s challenging brief.

BIID President Daniel Hopwood commented; “We are delighted this year to be launching the first – exclusively interior design – BIID Student Design Challenge, and are looking forward to welcoming some of the UK’s most promising interior design students to compete. The BIID is hugely committed to supporting new talent in our industry and this competition is just one of the ways we can encourage this. I am thrilled to be joined by such a high calibre of judges in Ben Spriggs and Katie Treggiden.”

Rex Liddiard, BIID Marketing & Events Executive added; “We are indebted to our peers at the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter (AIAUK) for allowing us to support their annual Charette over the past 4 years, which has provided us with the inspiration for this exciting new competition.”
